Thoughts on the period of readjustment after Covid plus lockdown plus cuts to the arts in general.
If anyone has a reasonable explanation that can summarise the end game with children being deprived of a significant form of expression which is music classical or traditional forms if you like If they don't ultimately actually perform by learning, they would understand themselves better they would be respectful of the principle of what is achievable through self discipline in a wide area of activities besides music. I remember the arts bodies were challenged to come up with programming if the funding was cut by fifty percent. That was fine people used their brilliance to devise still wonderful programmed arts events. Then it didn't stop there it became the question posed what would they the arts bodies do with a cut leaving them 2 percent? Still we are dealing with hyper creative people the 'show went on' Now, there are total cuts and the most extraordinary decisions. It is wonderful that the north of England is being given attention but it seems all or nothing. The flow of young people learning studying music playing instruments is I think in a crisis form, many university music courses have been cut or linked to other subjects to maintain their presence as a possible course of study. It is desperately sad. Rock pop as such are fine but that behemoth has completely taken over. This is narrow this is not even progressive.Somewhere a stitch has been dropped and we can bury our heads and operate in a smaller and smaller capacity but that won't work if the process of becoming a performer is linked to an earlier time not the present day and this change has happened so fast in fact in under twenty years.
